The first marriage proposal in which a diamond was used reportedly occurred in 1477 when Archduke Maximillian of Austria asked his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy, to marry him. This proposal set the precedent of using diamonds in Europe, a tradition we still follow today.
In a more socially, ethically and environmentally conscious world, concerns about the process of mining diamonds has increased, leading to the development and rise of lab-grown diamonds, also known as cultured diamonds. As a result, more and more people are embracing cultured diamonds.
The International Grown Diamond Association (IGDA) reported in February that their survey showed 66 percent of millennials are considering man-made diamonds, as they believe buying a lab-grown diamond is a good ethical decision. The association stated that consumer interest in lab-grown diamonds has increased substantially over the last decade.
Diamonds Created in Lab
Man-made diamonds were introduced circa 1954, but the process has evolved over the years. The preferred process nowadays is known as Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), which produces gem quality cultured diamonds that cost approximately 30 percent less than the natural diamonds. This is one of the reasons why consumers are choosing to buy lab created diamonds.

Lab created diamonds are grown using the same process as that of natural diamonds, which grow under immense heat and pressure with temperature ranging from 900 to 1300°C. The main distinction between both diamond origins is that mankind has recreated the Earth’s conditions in a controlled environment.
The time period in which these minerals are ready to be cut, polished, and graded is also a huge distinction. Cultured diamonds take six to twelve weeks to be formed, whilst natural diamonds are ready for extraction after 2.3 billion years on average.
To protect its consumers, Breslauer & Warren Jewellers make sure their lab created diamond rings are graded by the Gem Certification and Assurance Lab (GCAL), lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same criteria and stringent parameters as their mined counterparts, namely the 4C’s (color, clarity, cut and carat weight). The 4Cs is known as the universal method for assessing a diamond’s quality around the world.
Debunking Myths Surrounding Lab Diamonds
Although lab-grown diamonds have the same quality and characteristics as mined diamonds, consumers are still a bit hesitant in spending their money on them as myths continue to hound these cultured diamonds. One of the myths about man-made diamonds is that they are not real. Natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are composed of 99.95 percent pure carbon, and they have identical chemical, optical, and physical properties, in fact John King, Chief Quality Officer of the GIA has stated that regardless of origin they’re all real diamonds.
Another common misconception of lab created diamonds is that producing them is inexpensive. Actually, the process of creating synthetic diamonds is a very expensive and complicated procedure, mainly due to the cost of maintenance on the equipment necessary to complete this difficult process.

If you buy cultured diamonds, the grading report will state that the diamond originates from a laboratory. The same origin details can be seen on grading reports for natural diamonds respectively. All our lab-grown diamonds 0.75 carats and larger are laser inscribed.
Keep in mind that a colourless, flawless lab-grown diamond will still be more expensive in comparison to a blemished stone of the same carat due to its rarity. Consider however, that the cost of the cultured equivalent will be significantly less than its mined counterpart. It is important to understand that lab-grown diamonds are not produced in bulk and that each diamond has its own unique “fingerprint” comparable to the identifying marks found on mined diamonds.
