The Best Places to Propose in Calgary with that Perfect Diamond Ring!

calgary-main-title

Once you have found the engagement ring of your fiancé-to-be’s dreams all that is left is to pop the question!

Often times when I work with clients they are so focused on getting the perfect custom-made engagement ring that they leave all the questions of how they will propose to their love until the very end. Some gentlemen know exactly how they will ask, either through having had a direct or sneaky conversation with their partners, their close friends, and family or they keep it close to the vest until the right moment comes up. Let’s be clear, there really is no wrong way to propose to the love of your life! The action of proposing and meaning often overshadows the venue, the dinner, or other details we can worry over.

I have heard countless engagement stories, from clients of all ages and walks of life, not to mention all the clients that came before my time in our 102 years in business! Some had elaborate plots and great attention to detail, others were simple and sweet, just the two of you together in a moment of silence and love. During the Pandemic I watched dozens of clients stress over changed plans or canceled trips, and from all my years of working with clients around Calgary here are some of the best options I have heard, the most important part of any proposal is that each proposal should always be unique to the type of person you are and the person are going to marry.

The Urban Adventurers

You two love experiences, you love to try new things. Calgary is full of exciting experiences and day adventures around town. With a stunning skyline in the view from almost every high point in Calgary, there are so many great choices. You can try Scotsman’s Hill or Crescent Heights to overlook the urban skyline! You can watch the light display off of the Telus Spark building or see the lights of the Calgary Tower, It’s no wonder homes in these areas sell for millions, the views are spectacular! You met and fell in love in Calgary, our beautiful downtown core with its rivers and parks surrounding it make a simple walk along the bluff an epic place to pop the question! Pop the question on a night out at Stephen Ave between delectable restaurants and shops, by the fountains of Olympic Plaza, or at one of the many festivals thrown by the city throughout the year. The city is host to so many interesting and unique experiences that could make for a memorable proposal.

The Nature Lovers

We live in one of the most beautiful cities in Western Canada. With countless gorgeous urban parks and green spaces where you can find a hidden gazebo or quiet spot next to a river all the lusher. Just steps from the downtown core we have the East Village or Prince’s Island Park with kilometers of walking paths, the occasional sculptures, and art pieces or historic landmarks like the historic Deane House or River Cafe. Some of the nicest parks in Calgary to pop the question include Bowness Park and the Lagoon (during the winter you can skate along the lagoon, and it’s truly magical), Edworthy park you can get ice cream from Angel’s Cafe and walk along the Bow River. Pearce Estate Park or St. Patrick’s Island next to the Calgary Zoo are stunning greenspaces with lots of park benches, gazebos, and Harvie’s Passage Lookout. Of course who can forget Nosehill park where you can gaze over the entire city for miles or Fish Creek Park where you can wind through pathways and fire pits. South Glenmore Park and the Weaslehead trail offer lots of privacy and space while walking for a more secluded and quiet place to propose in Nature right here in town without making a day trip out to the Rockies.

The Foodies

Calgary has a bursting foodie scene. If your plan is to take your lover to a beautiful dinner where you plan to propose the city has some wonderful options for all tastes! For your traditional high-end menu featuring fine steak, seafood, and wines Murrieta’s on Stephen Ave is your place. A gorgeous venue located on the second floor of the historic  Alberta Hotel Building (c. 1890) you can dine while watching the hustle and bustle of the street below. Hy’s Steakhouse is another stellar choice for prime steak, delicious appetizers, and cocktails. I know several friends and clients who have popped the question with a glass of champagne after dinner here. You can try a dinner experience like the Sky 360 lounge in the Calgary Tower, this rotating restaurant gives you and your fiancé-to-be a delicious dinner and view. You can try dinner and a show at Stage West or Jubilations. You can watch your culinary masters prepare your food on a traditional Japanese hibachi grill at The Japanese Village or enjoy traditional Spanish food and Tapas at Las Canarias. The city is always adding new flavors and cocktail bars so there is always somewhere new to try!

The Country Lovers

She is your down-home girl, you are her good old country Man. We all know Calgary is famous for the Calgary Stampede. For 10 days every July our city buzzes with cowboy boots and hats on high. I know dozens of clients who have found love at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth! Whether they met two-stepping at Nashville North or at one of the many company stampede mixers thrown around the city the Stampede can be a magical place to pop the question. Take your love up the Ferris Wheel, or slowly across the sky tram, or at the fireworks after a grandstand show. If you don’t want to wait for your summer, Spruce Meadows is a beautiful place, Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant, or even Heritage park will give your western backdrop to your big moment.

The Home-Bodies

Your favorite activities are staying in together and just being comfy at home. You have been together for years, you share a home together, pets, maybe kids. You and your partner are more introverted not ones to make a big splash. A simple night in can be made into the most special of occasions. My childhood best friend turned client proposed in 2020 in just this way. He and his girlfriend had been together for 10 years and just purchased their first home together. Both come from large families where a family get together is a crowd in the best way. He knew from being with her for years that a quiet moment at home just the two of them was the perfect moment. He asked the love of his life to marry him while they cuddled by the fire on Christmas Eve.
